It's a national holiday ... one of those unique American things. I just love Super Bowl Sunday ... no matter who's playing usually ... but when you've got the first dynasty against a long-time cellar dweller it makes a great story for anybody to follow. And I love a good story.

Hi HB =)
YEs FB is indeed like a national holiday, BUT, why not TEnnis?, Soccer, golf, Vollyball, Basketball Etc.
What is it about FOOTBALL??

Your so good at making me think harder! I like that.
So here's my take on why it's football over all the others.
I think maybe it's because there's too much of all that other stuff. Nascar starts this month and won't end until November. Pitchers and catchers report this month and won't be done until October. The NHL and NBA started in October and won't be done until June. And it's every day of the week! (OK, not Nascar, but their season is too long.) Oh! They make me tired. But football is one game a week for 17 weeks. Compact.
In it's earliest form it was a destination ... and the NFL's done a great job of keeping it that way. You had to have space to play football, 100 yards to run. So back in the day they left their campuses (packed some food for the trip ... hello tailgating!) and engaged in one giant battle for strength. Sure those other games have strategy, finesse. But football has that touch of violence that appeals to base instinct.
Good or bad, sometimes it feels right to get in touch with base instinct.

Hi HB
I guess having missed the initial (SCHOOL SPIRIT - "get behind your team". "The Reps of our school strength") when I was in High School,- It did not even occur to me, that the game of defending "your school" "your team", "your city" "state" "home town", is part of global consciousness.
What explains the thousands of individuals who have no interest in it?
I suppose in a sociological perspective, FB could be seen as a tribal gathering and competition.
Your interesting perspective of the Violence factor being instinctive makes sense.
Wouldnt Boxing or wrestling be more fufilling to the base instinct?
I am guessing they dont play footbal in the middle east??
